Japanese Samurai Armor
Donated By: Andrew R. Adams
Samurai were powerful and highly-disciplined warriors in Japan for hundreds of years. They were highly regarded in Japanese society.
This suit of samurai armor is composed of a leather breastplate, which lays atop a silk chest guard. The armor has the traditional tiered skirt-like panels, with tied lacquered wood, and hair accents.
Along with a lacquered face mask and neck guard and ribbed helmet, the armor includes chainmail like those worn by knights in Europe in the middle ages, which for samurais was used for gauntlets on the arms. Epaulets on the shoulders are made of ribbed metal and connected with chains over silk and leather.
Did you know? Darth Vader’s costume in Star Wars was inspired by samurai armor. Want to know more about samurai?
