Play Synopsis: Imagine the loneliness of a teen-ager being away from home for the first time. And you’re not on vacation with a cell phone and internet access; you’re a soldier in the Civil War.
Inspired by the Civil War Exhibit at Roberson Museum, “Apron Strings” is a story about six young Union soldiers who fought in the same regiment. Kitchel, Andy, Nelson, Jimmy and Towser are returning to their homes in Broome County while Samuel, a freed slave, is en route to Syracuse.
The mustered-out soldiers share a freight compartment of the Erie Railway where secrets are revealed, racism exposed, meanness countered by generosity and great courage demanded. And if that’s not enough – they’ve all got fleas!
