The following is a list of public programs offered at Roberson Museum and Science Center. Many of the courses require registration, please call (607) 772-0660. Applications are available on-line and at the front desk. Please note that courses require a minimum number of participants. Public programs are subject to change, so please check the Museum website frequently for additional course offerings, lectures, and program cancelations.


FANTASTIC FRIDAYS AT ROBERSON

Fantastic Fridays feature special entertainment from 5:00 to 9:00 PM, and First Fridays of each month will be free to the public during those hours thanks to our sponsors. Check our website frequently to see what is happening.


 

PROGRAMS FOR ALL AGES
 

Animal Feedings

Saturdays, February – June, 3:00 PM.
Free with general admission.

View the live animals in our aquariums and terrariums in Confluence: A Tale of Two Rivers. As the birthplace of our community and a primary force in shaping its character, the confluence of the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers are addressed through lenses of environmentalism, ecosystems and cultural significance in this exhibition. This public feeding time allows visitors the chance to ask questions of Museum staff and learn more about our gallery critters.

 

Roberson Museum’s Teen Apprentice Program
Annual Exhibition

Now through November 2009

Come view artwork, writing excerpts, and media installations in this innovative exhibition designed by Binghamton area students. This exhibition, located in the Triple Cities Gallery, is curated by Roberson’s Teen Apprentices. For more information on Roberson’s Teen Apprentice Program and admission guidelines for 2009-2010. Applicants must submit a 250 word essay and a letter of reference from a teacher or guidance counselor.

FOR TEENAGERS

Thursday Afternoons October through May.
Grades 9 and up.

Roberson’s Teen Apprentices learn the foundation skills for interactive gallery teaching and the curatorial process of exhibitions. They develop programmatic and marketing skills and fabricate exhibitions. Learn about life behind the scenes of a museum. Get real-life job experience and bolster your resume. Applicants must submit a 250 word essay and a letter of reference from a teacher or guidance counselor.

ROBERSON SUMMER CAMPS 2009

The following is a list of summer camps offered at Roberson Museum and Science Center. Registration is required. Please call (607) 772-0660 to register. Applications are available on-line and at the front desk. Please note that camps require a minimum number of participants, and are subject to change. Please check the Museum website frequently for additional course offerings, lectures, and program cancelations. After-camp care is available at a fee of $40/week/child, $20 for each additional child from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Scholarships for tuition are available; call for more information.

 

Forensic Science Camp: Crime Scene Investigations

Wednesday through Friday, July 1 – 3 AND July 15 – 17, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
$114 for members, $142.50 for non-members. Grades 4-7.

Participants explore the exciting world of forensic science including crime scene investigation, evidence analysis, witness interrogation and fingerprinting! At the conclusion of the camp students conduct a trial with a jury of parents where they attempt to prove their case using the evidence they have collected. Materials included.

 

Biodiversity and Conservation Camp

Wednesday through Friday, July 8 - 9, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
$114 for members, $142.50 for non-members. Grades 4 - 7.

Participants will learn about biodiversity and human impact on the environment. Particular attention will be paid to the live animals featured in local ecosystems and the exhibition Confluence: A Tale of Two Rivers. Concepts such as genetic diversity, fragmentation, habitat loss and invasive species will be explored. Lessons will be taught both in the lab and outdoors. Materials included.

 

Astronomy Camp

Wednesday through Friday, July 22 - 24, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
$114 for members, $142.50 for non-members. Grades 4 - 8.

Learn to navigate by the stars. Create your own constellations and build a rocket to take home with you. Discover how the solar system formed. Step into the world of science and science fiction and make a short video of your own. Learn about robotics and see real robots in action. Peer into a black hole. Create our own space mission. Materials included.

 

Studio Art Camp

Wednesday through Friday, July 29 - 31, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
$114 for members, $142.50 for non-members. Grades 4 and up.

Students will discover the elements and principles of art and design by interpreting works from Roberson's collections and create their own original works of art in Roberson's studios. Many different art techniques and subjects such as architecture, sculpture, drawing, painting, and more will be explored. Materials included.

 

Hands-On Art Camp

Wednesday through Friday, August 5 – 7, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
$114 for members, $142.50 for non-members. Grades 2 - 4.

Children in this camp will participate in several hands-on activities and art projects. They will create art projects that include animal masks, shadow monsters, painted flower pots and more. Using inspiration from the Museum's temporary and permanent exhibitions, students will create and bring home numerous projects each day. Materials included.

 

Drawing and Animation Camp

Wednesday through Friday, August 12 - August 14, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
$114 for members, $142.50 for non-members. Grades 5 and up.

Participants will create carousel cartoons, flipbooks, and clay-mation characters. Campers will learn about character development, storyboarding, composition, and narrative. Materials included.

 

Time Detectives Camp

Wednesday through Friday, August 19 – 21, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
$114 for members, $142.50 for non-members. Grades 3 - 6.

In this camp children will imagine themselves on a journey through time. They will explore different time periods and cultures with corresponding art projects and activities. Children will use paper maché, make fossils, learn the proper etiquette of the Victorian Age social scene and more. Using Roberson's exhibitions for inspiration, campers will create multiple take-home art projects. Materials included.

Tuition is non-refundable. These camps have been made possible with support from the Roger L. Kresge Foundation. Funding is provided, in part, by general operating support grants from the United Cultural Fund, a program of the Broome County Arts Council, the Klee Foundation, and the New York State Council on the Arts.
