Fantastic Fridays feature special entertainment from 5:00 to 9:00 PM, and First Fridays of each month will be free to the public during those hours thanks to our sponsors. From the Link Planetarium, to the Decker Life Science Learning Center, to the nooks and crannies of the historic Roberson Mansion, you will rediscover the wonders this Binghamton “treasure” has to offer. Confluence Project: The Power of Rivers Opening Reception Thursday, May 8 Come view artwork, writing excerpts, and media installations by Binghamton High School students. This exhibition is curated by Roberson’s Teen Apprentice Program.
Visions of the Susquehanna Opening Reception Friday, June 6 As curator Rob Evans explains, “Rarely are we presented with such an opportunity to view a single subject through the eyes of so many extraordinary artists over such an extended period of time.” Hear Evans speak about the works in the exhibition at 7:00 PM. Roger Stein, former professor and guest curator for Roberson’s “Susquehanna: Images of the Settled Landscape” exhibition of 1981, will also speak.
Fiddlin’ is Fun Festival Sunday, June 22 Enjoy an afternoon of New England, Irish, Old-time, and French Canadian fiddle music along the banks of the Chenango River.

Learn about NestWatch, www.nestwatch.org, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s
newest citizen science project, which teaches people how to effectively monitor
bird nests and submit their nest records online. Citizens submit records and
data that are powerful tools for monitoring the success of nesting birds and
addressing impacts of large-scale changes like global climate change on birds.

BIRD DRAWING CLASS WITH JOHN BAUMLIN
Saturdays, May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 - 3 to 4 PM. Renowned artist John Baumlin will teach this five-session class. Using specimens from Roberson’s Loomis Wildlife Collection, students will learn drawing techniques and practice drawing several different species of birds. Students may use prints on view in the Audubon exhibition for inspiration. Students will provide their own pencils and sketch paper.
Beginning Pottery with Maryanne White Mondays, June 23 – August 11 Students will build a solid foundation in wheel throwing and learn the basics of handbuilding. The class is geared for the student with no clay experience or for those who have taken a class and would like to continue to improve their skills. The entire ceramic process will be covered, including glazing and firing techniques. Students will receive 25 lbs of clay. Silk Painting Workshop with Marianna Ross Saturdays, July 19 and July 26 Surprising color variations will unfold before your eyes as you paint onto Chinese silk. Though previous drawing and painting experience is helpful, this traditional Eastern medium lends itself to everyone’s unique expression, regardless of skill level. Simply bring rubber gloves and any visual materials that inspire you: sketches, designs, photos, fabric swatches, etc. Begin on a 12” x 16” piece of Chinese silk as a sampler and proceed to a 24” x 30” size suitable for framing. Silk and paint will be provided to you.

Apprentice Program
We will begin accepting application for the 2008-09 school year in May of 2008. Thursday Afternoons October through
May. Roberson’s Teen Apprentices learn the foundation skills for interactive gallery teaching and the curatorial process of exhibitions. They develop programmatic and marketing skills and fabricate exhibitions. Learn about life behind the scenes of a museum. Get real-life job experience and bolster your resume. following class) An Afternoon Interpreting Art Wednesday, June 25 Spend an hour with a Museum Educator viewing several works of art from Roberson’s permanent collections. Forensics Science Camp: Crime Scene Investigations Wednesday through Friday, July 9 –
11
Participants will learn the main components of forensic science including crime scene investigation and analysis, witness interrogation, and fingerprinting. Each of these techniques will be explored in a hands-on, high-tech facility. At the end of their investigation, students conduct a trial in front of a jury of their parents, where they attempt to prove their case using the evidence they have collected. Materials included.
Studio Art Camp Wednesday through Friday, July 16 –
18 Students discover the elements and principles of art and design by interpreting works from Roberson’s collections and create their own original works of art in Roberson’s studios. Many different art techniques and subjects such as architecture, sculpture, drawing, painting, and more will be explored. Materials included.
Biodiversity and Conservation Camp Wednesday through Friday, July
23-25 Participants will learn about biodiversity and man's impact on the environment. Concepts such as hot spots, genetic diversity, fragmentation and habitat loss will be explored. Lessons will be taught both in the lab and outdoors. Materials included.
Astronomy Camp Wednesday through Friday, July
23-25 Learn to navigate by the stars. Create your own constellations and build a rocket to take home with you. Discover how the solar system formed. Learn about robotics and see real robots in action. Peer into a black hole. Create our own space mission. Materials included.
Drawing and Animation Camp Wednesday through Friday, July 30 –
August 1 Participants will create carousel cartoons and flipbooks. Campers will create clay-mation characters and learn about character development, storyboarding, composition, and narrative. Materials included.
Theatricks Kids Camp Wednesday through Friday, August 6
- 8, AND August 13 – 15 Join Theatricks by Starlight this summer for an educational trip through the world of theatre. Over the course of two weeks, campers will bring a play from the page to the stage, by writing, revising, building, rehearsing and performing their own play. Parents are invited to the play’s world premiere. Materials included.
Hands-On Art Camp Wednesday through Friday, August 20
– 22 Children in this camp will participate in many hands-on activities and art projects. They will create art projects that include a thumb-print zoo, picture frame-mobiles, bird feeders and more. Using inspiration from the Museum’s temporary and permanent exhibitions, children will create and bring home numerous projects each day. Materials included. Decorate a Birdhouse. Sunday, June 8, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM.
In this family-friendly art workshop, you will paint and decorate your very own bluebird and/or titmouse house. You may take your creation home with you. Educators will offer environmentally friendly and bird-attraction decorating techniques. Materials included. Limited to 14 participants. Public program tuition is non-refundable. These programs have been made possible with support from the Kresge Foundation. Funding is provided, in part, by general operating support grants from the United Cultural Fund, a program of the Broome County Arts Council, the Klee Foundation, and the New York State Council on the Arts.

Summer Solstice Celebration Saturday, June 14 Celebrate the sun’s ascent in our sky. Learn about the traditions celebrated across the globe to commemorate this event. We will discover the astronomy behind the longest day of the year in this program. Spotlight on Jupiter Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13 Travel to the giant planet of our solar system as it nears its closest point to earth. See a red storm that has lasted for over 300 years. Rediscover the moons that Galileo saw in 1610 and ponder their potential for harboring life. Music under the Stars Friday, August 8 Treat your eyes and ears… Observe deep space objects on top of our dome as guest musicians perform beneath it.
