THE LIFE OF AN AMERICAN ARTIST AND NATURALIST:
JOHN JAMES AUDUBON

Audubon’s contribution to the world of fine art, natural science, and American history and literature continues to attract devotees from around the world. This multi-disciplinary exhibition focuses on the beauty of our natural wildlife, teaches environmental conservation, and introduces Audubon as naturalist, artist, and man. This program is tailored to meet the needs of various grade levels. Roberson’s Loomis taxidermy collection will also be featured in this exhibition.

RESPONDING TO ART (VISUAL THINKING STRATEGIES AND LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH VISUAL ARTS)

This VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) program builds descriptive vocabulary and provides a catalyst for creative thinking and writing activities using Roberson’s changing art exhibits. Students may brainstorm ideas, perform pre-writing activities and produce a rough draft of a story based on a work from the exhibition. (Although suggested for our temporary exhibitions, this program may be used with Roberson’s permanent galleries as well.)

MEET THE MUSEUM

Grades Pre-K through Adult

This program includes a guided tour of Roberson’s permanent and temporary exhibitions, the Roberson Mansion, a hands-on activity based on the job of a curator, and a planetarium show. The program explores the functions of a museum within its community as well as the people and activities that allow it to come to life. (For groups coming several times in one year, we suggest this for their first visit.)

STORYLAB / VOICES & VISIONS

Explore concepts of culture and community including immigration, change, diversity, tolerance, and respect in Voices & Visions. This is a literature-based curriculum that is enhanced by using pre-visit materials. Students participate in a studio art project related to multiculturalism and may choose to visit a temporary exhibition.

LINK THROUGH TIME AND SPACE

Celebrate over 100 years of flight by exploring the role Edwin A. Link played in the advancement of aviation, technology, and undersea exploration. Full program activities include exploration with aerodynamics, creative problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

IROQUOIS CULTURE

Discover the Iroquois, their culture, their relationship with the land, and how European culture has impacted native peoples while exploring the Local History Gallery. Students create pinch pots and learn Native American constellation legends in the Link Planetarium.

VISUAL HISTORY: PLACES MATTER

$175/class
Grades 3 through 12

Places Matter uses the Roberson Mansion as a primary source through which to study people, places, and events associated with our local history. A study of the local built environment using the Heritage Gallery provides insight into continuity and change in society. Program includes a city planning activity. Aspects of responsible citizenship pertaining to environmental stewardship and historic preservation are addressed through discussion and interactive activities.

ANASTASIA

$235/class
Grade 6 through Adult

The Romanov family ruled Russia for 300 years. In 1918, the last ruling Romanov, Nicholas II, and his family were executed and buried in a mass grave in Siberia. When the grave was exhumed, two of the bodies were missing, one being the body of Anastasia. Did Anastasia, the youngest of three daughters, miraculously escape execution? In this computer-interactive activity, students will meet Anna Anderson, who claimed to be the missing Anastasia, and use forensic tools, including DNA analysis, to divulge the mystery of Anastasia.

You may choose to add on a DNA EXTRACTION program for larger groups and a fee. In this program students learn DNA extraction’s use in medical research, genetic engineering, and its forensic applications. Finally, students extract DNA from a fruit sample.

Local History Programs

IMMIGRATION: PAST AND PRESENT

Grades 4 through 12

Gain an understanding of the cultural diversity of our community’s immigrants through authentic stories in the Voices & Visions gallery. Students explore concepts of culture, discrimination, tolerance and respect. They also participate in a document-based timeline, immigrant trunk activity in our Local History Gallery OR participate in our Factory simulation and General Store activity to compare/contrast economic factors between the 1930’s and the present. Choices are made when scheduling.

Discover our community’s evolution from prehistoric times to the present in the exhibition Community Transformed: Social Change in Broome County; explore Broome County history with a timeline activity in the Visitor Center or local industrialization in our Factory assembly line activity. (The Parlor City Paper Box Co., Inc supplies Assembly line shoebox parts.) Analyze primary source documents and historic artifacts. Choose from different history lesson combinations when you schedule the program

SUPER SCIENCE DAYS

Join us for a great fun-filled day of science programs. Students participate in various activities throughout the Museum. Businesses from the region are showcased, giving students an initial opportunity to learn more about science-based careers. Students may see a planetarium show and perform various labs in the Decker Life Science Learning Center.

SCIENCE A LA CARTE

$175/class
Grades 1 through 8

Customize your visit according to a science theme and choose from a menu of journey of a water molecule, nocturnal animals, polymers, ecology, environmental science and more. Learn about the tools astronomers use to study light. A selection list of the specific grade level offerings will be sent when you schedule the program. A planetarium show may be included in this visit.

RIVER STUDIES

Offered only May through November 15
(2 ½ hour program)

Discover the Chenango and Susquehanna River habitats by engaging in an intensive field study. Students collect specimens and water samples from the river, analyze the water samples and research specimens while using a ProScope. Students encounter an intensive field experience while enhancing their scientific skills. This 2 ½ hour program is limited to a maximum of 25 students.

MAGIC with MICROSCOPES!

$235/class
Grades 4-5

Discover a stunning new world hidden from the naked eye! Students learn how to use compound and dissection microscopes. They will apply scientific inquiry to the microscopic world through hands-on and virtual activities. Students prepare their own slides and participate in a microscopes webquest in which students learn about the history of microscopes and their varying uses. Students may make a presentation at the end of the class.

GEL ELECTROPHORESIS

$235/class, limited to 25 students total
Grades 9-12
(2 ½ hour program)

Students will investigate DNA using hands-on gel electrophoresis techniques. Chose from 1 of 2 tracts listed below:
1) Solving a Mystery: A crime has occurred and your students have been called to solve the mystery. Through the lab, students will be introduced to DNA fingerprinting by VNTR analysis and gel electrophoresis techniques. They will be given DNA samples of 2 suspects, the victim and DNA that was found at the crime scene. Your students will perform gel electrophoresis to compare the DNA samples and find the culprit!
2) Recombination Technology: Students will be introduced to the methods and reasons for recombination technology. They will use lambda DNA to explore how geneticists are able to use DNA for clinical, agricultural, and phylogenetic purposes. Students will use HindIII, EcoRI, and a mystery restriction enzyme to cut a lambda phage. They will then perform gel electrophoresis to determine the identity of the mystery enzyme.

Outreach Programs

MYSTERY OF THE MONTH OUTREACH PROGRAM

Grades 2 through 8

Your school receives a mysterious artifact once a month (September-May) for your classroom. Artifacts range from tools to toys and relate to American History. Each shipment includes a teacher’s guide and a context clue. This is a great way to get students excited about social history through hands-on observation.
NY Standards: ELA 1,3, 4; SS 1
PA Standards: RWSL 1.6, 1.8; H 8.1


Planetarium Programs

Planetarium programs can be booked separately for $115/class, ($4.60/student for groups larger than 25 with a maximum of 50). All shows include a look at the night sky and may include newly discovered information. Updates from NASA are added monthly. Teachers can request a copy of the current sky map.

Larry Cat in Space

(K through 2)

Follow a fun, fictional tale of a clever cat who travels to the moon. This program introduces concepts such as gravity, craters, etc.

Celestial Tour

(Grades 2 and up)

View seasonal stars and constellations as well as a program based on a current space topic (such as the Hubble Space Telescope, Moons of Saturn, etc). Content varies dependent on age level.

Solar System Tour

(Grades 2 and up)

Travel the Solar System from the Sun to beyond Pluto. Content varies dependent on age level.

Native Skies

(Grades 3 through 7)

Navigate the night sky with Native American lore, comparing indigenous constellation stories with those of Classical mythology.

Comprehensive Night Sky

(Grades 4 and up)

Entire program is devoted to viewing stars and constellations throughout each season of the year. Students will learn how to read a sky map and learn some classic constellation stories. Star distance and color will also be investigated.

Earth Science Review

(Grades 8 and up)

This program explains celestial coordinates, Sun and moon positions in the sky, Moon phases, etc. Content can be catered to students’ needs (call ext. 236 for requests).


LINK PLANETARIUM PUBLIC SHOWS

Public shows are also available Friday nights at 8 pm, and Sat and Sun at 1, 2 and 3.  The content changes frequently throughout the year. Call the Link Planetarium at  (607) 772-0660, ext.236, for an update of current shows!

Decker Life Science Learning Center

The Decker Life Science Learning Center is a state-of-the-art laboratory, classroom and exhibition facility. Dedicated to the study of DNA and biotechnology, it is among only a handful of similarly-equipped science museums around the world.


The Decker Life Science Learning Center, located on the Museum’s second floor, features a laboratory classroom, a computer lab and an exhibit area to introduce students and the general public alike the science of genetics, biotechnology and DNA. Programs that explore animal and plant cells, DNA makeup, observing mutations and genetics are being offered to schools. Fascinating programs are also being introduced to both schools and as public programs.
